Graphite or Colored Pencil?Graphite captures details nicely and focuses on expression without color getting in the way. These are always a nice classic way to comemmorate a cherished pet. Tip: smaller pets like small birds and mammals as well as cats look best in the smaller sizes so the portrait won’t look “Larger than Life”. Larger pets and multiple pets are better on larger sizes. Graphite drawings are done with artist quality pencils on acid free Bristol Vellum or Rising Stonehenge Paper. It is then sprayed with a fixative coating to prevent smudging or yellowing. Graphite drawings should be framed with a mat under glass. Colored Pencil drawings are unique in that they can capture the essence of a pet in full color. They can emulate the look of oil and acrylic paints at a much more affordable price. Colored pencil as a medium is ideal on colorful pets such as birds and uniquely colored pets. The added ability to get the fine details in to the portrait are also great. Colored pencil drawings are created using Prismacolor and Derwent artist quality pencils. Backgrounds are done in either colored pencil or soft pastel to get the light diffused look, almost like a photo background. They are done on Bristol Vellum or Rising Stonehenge paper, and sprayed with a fixative to prevent wax bloom and fading. Colored pencil drawings should be framed with a mat under glass.
